La Crosse Mayor Will Charge the President

The mayor in La Crosse is asking city department heads to keep track of expenses related to President Bush's visit Friday, and John Medinger plans to submit the bill to the Bush campaign.

He says it's a campaign visit and the taxpayers should not subsidize it. He says he'll do the same when Senator John Kerry visits.

Bush is also visiting Prairie du Chien and Dubuque, Iowa. Prairie du Chien Mayor Cheryl Mader was not available for comment.

Dubuque City Manager Mike Van Milligen says he too plans to submit the bills. The La Crosse mayor says the city billed the White House when former President Bill Clinton visited in 1998, though White House officials argued about it.

Medinger didn't recall if the city billed when Bush visited Logan High School in 2002 to discuss his “No Child Left Behind'' education program, but Medinger says that visit was about presidential business.
