75 people evacuated from apartment complex after fire

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU)--The La Crosse Fire Department is investigating the cause of a small explosion at an apartment complex.

The department says it happened around 2:15 a.m. Friday at the Wedgewood Common Apartments on 1935 Miller Street.

Crews were called after an alarm sounded in the boiler room area. As firefighters were investigating, an explosion happened in the boiler room. Firefighters believe the water heater malfunctioned, causing the explosion. There was only minor damage.

About 75 people had to be evacuated to a city bus. They were allowed back in several hours later and no one was hurt.
