A federal jury has found a decorated Navy veterans guilty of robbing a Red Wing, Minnesota credit union in 2001.

He was to have gone on trial in 2002, but he fled the state with his son who was living in Pepin, Wisconsin. He and his two-year-old son were found 15 months later in a small Ohio town.

Samples was aboard to the USS Stark in 1987 when an Iraqi missile blew a hole in the side of the ship killing 37 sailors. He was awarded a medal of heroism for moving several Stinger missiles from the path of fires.
