Donors have given Steven Avery $3,000 in just a week. Avery is the Manitowoc County man who spent 18 years wrongly imprisoned for a rape he didn't commit.
State Representative Garey Bies of Sturgeon Bay set up a fund a week ago after learning that Avery was sleeping in an ice shanty on his sister's property in Two Rivers.
Avery had been living at his parents' home nearby and working in the family auto salvage business. But differences of opinion caused him to leave.
The Wisconsin Innocence Project worked for two years to free Avery. It's now helping him submit a claim for compensation from the state. Anything more than $25,000 would need legislative approval.
