The Natural Resources Board approved emergency rules Wednesday for property owners on Lakes Michigan and Superior.
>
It allows the landowners to use backhoes and other mechanical equipment to get rid of rotting seaweed and mussels.
>
Before Wednesday’s action, if a property owner wanted to use mechanical equipment, they needed a DNR permit, which costs $500 and was subject to a 30 day public comment period.
>
DNR Secretary Scott Hassett says the emergency rules are needed because of a "perfect storm" of events: falling lake levels, growth of zebra mussels and the recent arrival of mussels.
