ELF Protest Arrests

Nine people are to appear in U.S. District Court in Madison this week charged with trespassing on a closed military installation.

Police Sunday arrested the people when they entered the grounds of the U.S. Navy's ELF Site. The location emits extremely low radio frequencies to submarines around the world. It's located there because of the type of rock beneath the earth. The transmitter allows communications with nuclear subs that don't have to surfaces.

The installation, located in Ashland County, is the repeated target of anti-nuclear demonstrations and this year involved more than 100 people on the `17th anniversary of protests at the site. This year's event was organized by Nuke Watch.

The arrests are mostly for trespassing, and carry a maximum fine of $5,000 and up to six months in jail.
