Meningitis is a serious disease that kills one in four adolescents who contract the disease.

New state legislation went into effect this year that requires colleges and universities to inform students about the risks of Meningitis and how to get vaccinated.

UW-Eau Claire health officials say it’s an important precaution for incoming students to take.

"It's one other strategy that helps to keep a disease that could potentially be fatal under control, and it's another way of protecting yourself," says Student Health Services Director Laura Chellman.

She also reports that the clinic vaccinated around 500 students in the last school year, but health officials are waiting until the fall to gauge whether the legislation encourages more vaccinations.
