Students in the Eau Claire School District will see some big extra curricular cuts next year, including the loss of nine coaches.

Dozens of people packed the school board room Monday night, even spilling into the hallway to find out what programs will be cut and how much activity fees will go up.

After hours of recommendations, debate and public input here's what the board decided for Eau Claire’s high schools:

--High school athletes will pay twice as much per sport. The board voted to raise user fees from $50 to $100 per sport. That will bring in an extra $71,788.

--Memorial High School will lose a football coach, saving the district $3,857.

--Athletic teams will only be allowed four tiers per sport. That means fewer students will be able to play sports like girls volleyball and boys basketball, but the district will save $22,909.

--The board also decided to keep the $1 renovation fee that was tacked onto football admission tickets. The renovations are finished, but keeping that dollar fee will bring in an extra $4,871.

Board members say, in total, those changes will save the district more than $103,425.

For the city’s middle schools:

--Students will have eight less coaches next year. That eliminates $22,400 from the budget.

--Students will also pay a $40 user fee, up from $25 per sport. That will bring in $21,019.

--The board also voted to cut the equipment budget by $5,600.

The changes in Eau Claire’s middle schools mean $49,019 for the district.

With all those cuts, students and parents tell NewsCenter 13 they're worried about under-privileged kids who might end up missing out.

"Some fees will turn this elitist, especially the case of kids," says Karen Peikert, a concerned parent. "It will eliminate some of the kids who are able to play. The kids that can afford traveling teams, private coaches and camps will be the ones playing high school sports and I don't think that's the essence of public school system."

Eau Claire North Freshman Mariah Monsel says "I'm mad. A lot of my friends on the team can't afford it, but, they're great athletes. They just don't have the financial help."

Some board members are worried about the same thing. During the meeting, they spoke out about other possibilities and called on the community to pitch in.

"We're reaching out and asking for some help, some volunteer help, so we don't have to eliminate things for students that they really need to stay engaged," said Board Member Mary Kneer.

Board Member Ken Faanes commented on how much middle school coaches make: "We're looking at 60 hours for $2800. I think there's a significant opportunity there to reduce the cost."

The board still needs to come up with more than $800,000 in cuts before the budget is balanced. District leaders tell us they hope to accomplish that by mid-summer.
