Hutchinson Technology is trimming about 10 percent of its workforce, and will cut 165 positions in Eau Claire.

Company leaders say the layoffs will affect workers from all shifts and departments, including manufacturing and support positions.

In a statement released today, HTI leaders say: "This is a very difficult decision, but necessary in order for HTI to be a profitable and growing company."

The company is reporting an estimated loss of about $6 million, or 23 cents per share, in the first eight weeks of the fiscal third quarter.

Before the layoffs, about 5,300 employees worked for the company's four U.S. locations.

This will cut HTI's workforce by 10 percent nationally and in Eau Claire.

The announcement comes just two months after 3M announced the closing of its Eau Claire plant.
