Officers arrest a 34-year-old Woodville man accused of driving to Eau Claire to have sex with a 15-year-old girl.
Shawn Wettig is charged with use of a computer to facilitate a sex crime and attempted sexual assault of a child. He faces 60 years in prison and $150,000 in fines.
Special Agent in Charge Jed Sperry with the Wisconsin Department of Justice says Wettig would never have met up with the 15-year-old girl. That's because he was actually talking on-line to a special agent with Department of Justice. But, he says this is a reminder to parents that predators are out there.
Investigators say Wettig didn't even bother to pretend he was teenager when he chatted on-line with someone he thought was a 15-year-old girl. The special agent posing as the young girl worked on the case for almost a year.
"This investigation started in January of '09," Sperry says.
Sperry says agents spend as much time as possible chatting on-line looking for child predators. They say found Wettig in a Yahoo chat room.
"There is a grooming process. They get to be friends with the victims and become buddies," Sperry says.
Court documents show Wettig, using the name SW_SOFTBALL_STUD, had about 14 conversations with the agent. They eventually turned sexual. During one of them, investigators say Wettig agreed to drive to an Eau Claire gas station to meet up with the girl. He didn't stop there, but officers later pulled him over and arrested him. Court documents say during an interview Wettig told them he planned to pick up the girl and drive her back to her house to have sex.
"Parents will see this on today's newscast and they've got to talk to their kids. I truly believe the first line of defense to guarding kids are kids themselves and the best way they can defend themselves is with knowledge," Sperry says.
We talked Shawn Wettig's father Friday night. He says his son had a serious lapse in judgement. But, he says when he got to the gas station, he decided not to follow through with his plans. He says when Wettig was arrested, he was on his way home.
Wettig will be back in court December 23. A judge set a $10,000 signature bond.
Sperry didn't have exact numbers for how many on-line predators are busted every year. But, he says right now there are well over 10,000 personal computers in Wisconsin with child pornography on them.
