Roundhouse Demolished

One of the oldest structures in the Chippewa Valley is about to come down, and the demolition of the Altoona Roundhouse shows just how long it's been since the railroad was the leading form of transportation in Western Wisconsin. Dating back to the last part of the 19th Century, the Roundhouse was the focal point for freight and passenger trains. Hundreds of workers would service the trains, that stopped at nearly every town in the region. Despite attempts by railroad enthusiasts, no government or private groups have provided enough money to prevent the demolition that got underway this week.
