Lawmakers working on the health care overhaul debating a measure that would allow importation of low-cost prescription drugs from Canada and other countries.
It's a measure the Obama administration opposes, along with the pharmaceutical industry. The president needs the backing of the drug industry to push his health care bill through congress.
Among other things, the FDA says the proposal would make it difficult to guarantee the safety of imports. The most crucial work on the nearly trillion-dollar measure continues to be done behind closed doors. Senate majority leader Harry Reid is pushing to have the bill finished by Christmas.
