UPDATE:
If you live in Eau Claire, you're living in the 9th most secure places in the country. A new list on the top 20 most secure places ranks Eau Claire in the top ten.
People around town weren't too surprised but are still glad to be living here. The streets were quiet on Friday afternoon, houses nestled in white snowbanks and with the snow comes a blanket of security.
"I would have to agree I lived in New Mexico for college but we moved back here to raise a family because it is so safe and there's a lot to do," says Amy Mckane.
According to farmers insurance, Eau Claire is the 9th most secure places in the U.S. The ranking is based on statistics studying everything from crime to weather and job loss to life expectancy.
"I moved up from Milwaukee and it's a load off my mind not having to worry about crime,” says Alicia Aubart.
The Eau Claire Police Department says it can't take full credit for making the city safe but will do what it can to keep it that way.
"We are confident that a lot of the techniques we have implemented have helped reduce crime and were proud of that," says Jason Kaveney.
While Eau Claire is in the top ten people around town do realize they still need to be careful.
"It's fantastic we live in a safe town especially considering Chicago and the Twin Cities but crime still happens every single day," says Scott Lokken.
"I think you always have to be careful where ever you are but for the most part I feel very safe,” says Amy Mckane.
The ranking is only for cities with fewer than 150,000 people. Wausau was 18 on the list and La Crosse and Winona came in at number 20. The number one was a tie between Lewiston, Idaho and Clarkson Washington.
