Eau Claire County is in need of more foster families who are willing to help local children in need.
>
But, if you’re thinking of becoming a foster parent to an infant, a playful toddler or even a teenager, realize that it will take some work.
>
Eau Claire County Foster Care Coordinator, Sherill Jahr, said, “It's a long process and there's a reason why it is, you know, it's getting to know the families, building those relationships so we're making good matches."
>
Jahr says the licensing process usually takes about four to five months, and involves a series of interviews, meetings and training courses, as well as background and reference checks.
>
"The licensing process also serves another purpose and that's getting to know the family so we can glean an understanding about how this family operates."
>
And now, there’s an extra step in the process. Jahr says Eau Claire County is one of eleven counties currently piloting a new training curriculum, called pre-placement training.
>
"It's really the nuts and bolts of what foster parents need to know before they accept a child into their home."
>
Jahr says the pre-placement training could be available to all counties by January of 2008.
>
Current foster parent, Iris Buonauro, went through the in-depth classroom training about 2 ½ years ago, and says it was very educational.
>
"It was a very relaxed atmosphere,” Buonauro said. “We did a lot of things as far as role play. It was very, made me not so nervous, and it also opens your eyes to what you're going to be getting involved with."

Helping each family decide if foster care is truly right for them.
