New guidelines have been released by the Wisconsin Medical Society for dealing with chronic pain symptoms.

The guidelines are intended to help primary care physicians properly diagnose and treat pain.

The 14 member task force released the report after two years of research, finding that a combination of methods like physical, psychological and medicinal treatments help patients the most.

Another key component to quicker recovery is timely detection.

"Early access to the clinic is very important to patients," says Dr. Mark Schlimgen of Luther's Pain Clinic. "I think we're far more successful if I see the patient in the first two months of their pain as opposed to two or three years later, not only for the treatment of the pain, which is important, but for return to function."

Research for the guidelines started after complaints at lack of insurance payments from doctors and lack of results from treatment from insurance companies.
