A report released Thursday says figures for 2001 show that the percentage of low-weight babies in the state increased, while the infant and child mortality rates fell slower than the national average.

The Casey Foundation said Wisconsin still ranked better than the national average in most categories. Helen Nelson, secretary of the state department of health and family services, says the numbers show Wisconsin can improve on children’s health, particularly in the gap between white and black infant mortality. African-American rates are two-and-a-half times higher than for whites.
