A man jailed in Juneau on federal immigration and customs enforcement charges wound up at Beaver Dam community hospital after eating several pencils.

Police say the inmate in the Dodge County jail broke the pencils apart and swallowed the pieces.

The sheriff says it's unclear whether the incident Tuesday night was part of an escape plan.

The man was taken to the hospital and kept under observation with an armed guard on duty to watch him.
