The federal government is investigating the killing of 16 wolves in three states, including Wisconsin.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the wolves were killed in November and December. Eight were killed in Wisconsin, two in Minnesota and six in Michigan.

In Wisconsin, the wolves were killed in Burnett, Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Adams, Monroe and Jackson counties and on two Native American reservations. Wolves in Wisconsin and Michigan are considered endangered. In Minnesota they are considered threatened.
