The campus is one of four designated by Governor Jim Doyle to produce or acquire as much renewable energy as they consume by 2012. The others are the UW campuses in Green Bay, Oshkosh and Stevens Point.

UW-River Falls opened a $34 million environmentally friendly university center in January. The center has storage for 48,000 gallons of rainwater, which will be used to flush toilets. With a white roof to reflect sunlight, the center is expected to cut energy consumption by 40 percent.
