For 70 years, talented municipal musicians have gathered to play at the park in Eau Claire.

It's a tradition that spans generations and also brings them together. Some of the band's members are in college and some are well past retirement.

The city band not only spans decades, but it even seats three generations of one family in the same section.

It's a trumpet tradition for the Hazelton men.

"We’re ‘The Hazeltones’—we get a kick out of that," says 75-year-old Dick Hazelton.

Dick Hazelton joined the city band 59 years ago, an inspiration to his grandson, James Madison Hazelton.

"When I was young, my grandpa was always the lead, so every week he'd have a solo," says James Madison Hazelton.

Ten years ago, Dick's son, James Richard Hazelton took up trumpeting for the city.

"Then I didn't have anyone to sit with," says James Madison.

So, he picked up his horn and completed the trumpeting trio.

"My dad's at the end so he doesn't bother me,” says James Madison. “And I have the leadership of my grandfather next to me."

Trumpets raised together for four years, the Hazeltons happily perform every Thursday, every summer. It's music to the ears of their band mates.

"What other activity can three generations all compete and play in the same arena?" asks Band Member Pam Lehmeier.

Dick, too, knows they've got something special.

"Say I played football, and my son played football,” Dick says. “At 75, I certainly wouldn't still be playing football. We're trumpet players."

Trumpet players letting their song keep them close…

"It's certainly continued a family tradition," says James Richard.

"It's the only family activity," adds James Madison.

…and bridging the years between them.

"It’s a good feeling," says Dick.

Continuing an Eau Claire event enjoyed by so many.

You can see the "Hazeltones" and the entire band every Thursday at 7:30 at Owen Park.
Just like it's members the band attracts a crowd of all ages.
