Former Western Wisconsin Congressman Eyed for UW President

Former U.S. Representative Steven Gunderson, formerly of rural Osseo in Trempealeau County, is among those nominated to become president of the University of Wisconsin System.

Kathrine Lyall steps down in September and the Madison Capital Times newspaper reported Friday that Gunderson has the interest of some of those on the UW Regents search committee.

The group will meet for another week, and then forward three or four finalists for consideration. Not all people contacted by the committee have authorized their names to be made public.

Gunderson was the 3rd Congressional District representative to Washington for 16 years having first been elected in 1980. He chose not to run for a ninth term in 1996, and left elected office.
