Tuesday evening many questions remain unanswered about how two inmates managed to fool prison guards with forged documents and walk right out of the front doors at the Stanley prison.

On Monday, Stanley Mayor David Jankoski declined to be interviewed on camera, saying he was told no one in the town was ever in any danger. But Tuesday, he's voicing some concerns about the escape.

The Mayor says many of his own questions are still unanswered, but he thinks this escape might have temporarily shaken the faith of the town in the prison's ability to remain secure.

Mayor David Jankoski was born and raised in Stanley. After attending college he came back and raised his family here.

But right now, many people in this small town aren't feeling so secure. Jankoski tells us, “My first reaction is I wondered how it could have happened. I would certainly hope that the procedures that they put in place would prevent this from happening again.”

Construction on the Stanley prison began 12 years ago, for the most part the prison has been well received in the community, but after these two escapes, the Mayor says the prison might have to regain the publics trust.

Jankoski says, “One of the things that needs to occur is that the community needs to have the prison officials and the division of corrections sharing with the community what procedures they're putting in place to ensure this doesn't happen again.”

But as of right now both the Chief of Police of Stanley and the Prison Warden aren't talking about the details of the escape, or why WEAU 13 news or people in this town were never notified.

Brian Rozwardski is a Stanley resident, he says, “My first question is how did they get the paperwork to even do this? How come nobody knew about this, did they want to keep it quiet or what's the story?”

Stanley Police Chief Roy Fredrickson told us on the phone Tuesday that many more details of the escape will come out after the investigation has been completed.

The Stanley prison is classified as a medium security prison with more than 1500 inmates.
