Fewer Jobless in Northern Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development says the number of jobs added in the northern part of the state in May was the largest monthly increase in four years. Officials say nearly 4,000 jobs were added in a region bounded by Ashland to Rusk counties and Douglas to Taylor counties.

Unemployment rates in 66 of Wisconsin's 72 counties declined in May. Specifically, the Eau Claire metro area's unemployment rate last month was up slightly from 4.2% to 4.6%. This compares to the La Crosse area at 3.8% in May up two-tenths of a point.

The state's highest jobless rate is in Racine at 7.1%. The state's lowest in May was Madison at 2.7%.
