MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The St. Croix Chippewa tribal chairman says the recession has hit Wisconsin reservations especially hard.
Lewis Taylor delivered the sixth annual State of the Tribes address to a joint session of the state Legislature. He says reservations' remote locations have made tribes more vulnerable to the economic downturn.
He says tribes have been lobbying lawmakers in Washington, D.C., for more stimulus money. He says that money would only help the entire state. He didn't go into detail.
He also called for lawmakers to consult more often with tribes, a tribal representative on the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents, state benefits for tribal police officers and better broadband access on reservations.
