The Chippewa County district attorney says Shane Hawkins, 30, confessed to murdering Jason Grau, 17, as he slept at Hawkins' Chippewa Falls home. The criminal complaint says Hawkins said he stabbed Grau multiple times in the neck and back.
Security was tight at Hawkins' initial appearance in Chippewa County court Tuesday afternoon. Jason Grau's friends and family wore red wristbands and bandannas in Jason's memory. His mom says red was her son's favorite color.
Hawkins stared straight ahead as he walked by Grau's family.
According to the criminal complaint: "Hawkins admitted that Grau appeared to be asleep when Hawkins entered the room and stabbed him. Hawkins stated that the stabbing was not the result of a struggle between himself and Grau."
It says "Hawkins stated, 'Well I don't remember that day, I just remember being angry.'"
When asked what he was angry about, the complaint says Hawkins replied "a lot of things in general but that doesn't make it right killing someone. I just remember being angry. I was just sick of a lot of people talking, taking advantage of me..."
Chippewa County District Attorney Jon Theisen says Hawkins hasn't been clear about a motive.
"I think he's changed his story several times. What's in the complaint is in the complaint," Theisen says.
In the complaint, investigators say Hawkins admitted that he put Grau's body in his car and drove it to the river. They also say Hawkins admitted using bleach to clean blood stains from his couch and carpeting. The complaint says Hawkins said he threw away things like Grau's cell phone.
The complaint also says "Hawkins later stated that he had contemplated killing six more people during the next year."
"We didn't know anything about the other people until Sunday night when he was already in custody and obviously at that point he wasn't a threat to others," says Chippewa Falls Interim Police Chief Capt. John Liddell.
Liddell and Theisen say Hawkins' mention of wanting to kill others doesn't go against the original statement law enforcement made in this case when they said there was no danger to the public.
"This wasn't a random killing of somebody going for a walk on the trail and that was the important information to get out to the public," Theisen says.
Prosecutors say Hawkins told investigators he acted alone in the killing of Jason Grau and in the hiding of Grau's body.

Later Tuesday afternoon, at a visitation, hundreds of friends and loved ones came out to share stories about Jason Grau. There was a time of prayer and some stories were shared. Loved ones talked about what a special person they lost. One of Grau's teachers talked about how Jason helped his son catch his first muskie.
"It's very hard. It's going to be very hard for everybody for a long time. I don't think anyone's going to forget this," says Shawn O'Bryan, wearing a red bandanna in memory of his friend.
Shawn O'Bryan and Cory Stoner say they knew Jason Grau since middle school. They say they fished and hunted together. They also say they did some of those same things with Hawkins.
"I just never would've expected it to be him," Stoner says, also wearing red.
Monday, friends told us Grau and his family were close to Hawkins. They say Hawkins even stayed with Grau's family at some point. But, they also say Grau's family thought Hawkins was in his early 20's.
They say when Grau disappeared last week, friends came to Hawkins’ home on Elm Street in Chippewa Falls looking for him--the same home where prosecutors say Hawkins killed Grau.
Hawkins remains in jail Tuesday night. He's being held on a $500,000 cash bond. Theisen says he will ask for no bond at a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 29.

She says her son loved to draw, was great with kids and was thinking about being a taxidermist someday. She says she laid flowers by the river along with some of his friends.
