If you fly out of the La Crosse Municipal Airport, you may notice some construction. It’s happening just past the security check point and down the runway.

Traveler Melissa Lusk from Coon Valley spent a four-day-weekend at home visiting family.

"It was great to be back in the La Crosse area, but I’m not sure if I’m ready to head back to New York," Lusk said.

But she has to get back to work. And when her flight takes off, she may see some of the work that construction crews are doing at the airport.

“We currently have a relocation of taxiway c or extension of taxiway foxtrot. That’s our parallel taxi way to our main runway,” said La Crosse Municipal Airport manager Dan Wruck.

He says that they’re working on relocating the taxiway to the western side. He thinks travelers probably won’t notice the difference.

“We try to go to great lengths to not impact the operational concerns of the air carriers," Wruck says, adding that it will make a difference for the way planes travel on the ground.

"By decreasing the number of crossings, you inherently lower the risk of any type of collision between a departing or arriving aircraft and one that’s taxing," Wruck said.

The $4.2 million taxiway project is funded by a federal grant.

Plans are also in the works to possibly construct a military lounge.

"It’s really designed for an area for the military travelers who have a longer wait at the airports than the normal traveler does," Wruck explains. "They come out on a bus many times at 3, 4 O’clock in the morning and they may not depart sometimes 6 O'clock in the afternoon.

If approved, the lounge would be built using money raised through donations.

Lusk thinks her siblings who are in the military and use the La Crosse airport would appreciate a more comfortable space.

"I'm not really sure how long they’ve had to hang out at an airport, but just comfortable chairs, places to sit.”

And a place to relax before a flight.

Wruck says the military lounge proposal will go before the common council later this week.

Wruck hopes the taxiway project will be done by the end of this year’s construction season.

Meanwhile, new bathrooms beyond the security check point will hopefully be finished next month.
