It's probably pretty hard for Lauren Micolichek to give all of her attention to the violin. After all, she'll be in the nation's capitol for three days in April to receive AAA's Safety Patrol Lifesaving Award.
"It was like a once in a lifetime deal," Lauren said.
"If everybody was as...fast-thinking as Lauren, we wouldn't have any accidents," said Ralph Coushman, a safety patrol advisor. He's also a former Chippewa County Sheriff, who is going to D.C. to receive the Safety Patrol Advisor of the Year Award. He broke the news to Lauren this week.
"I'm like oh my gosh, no way!" she said.
Now, when Lauren walks through the halls of Chippewa Falls Middle School, her classmates are waving to her, teachers are even calling her a celebrity, and she says that's pretty neat.
Last April, Lauren was keeping an eye out for student pedestrians with a safety patrol near A Street and Wisconsin.
"A girl was bouncing a bouncy ball and she wasn't paying attention and we were starting to cross her and a really fast car came up," Lauren said.
"Lauren real quickly shouted to this young lady to back up, and then she brought her flag back and stopped the young girl," Coushman said.
Coushman says the girl may have died if it wasn't for Lauren. She just hopes her classmates learn from what happened.
"Even though the cross guards are going to be looking both ways, I think the other kids that are going to be crossing still should look both ways," Lauren said.
It's a lesson that comes from the girl who doesn't play second fiddle to any student in Wisconsin when it comes to safety in the crosswalk.
Coushman tells us the lifesaving award only goes to one person in each state. The driver of the car in the incident was not charged.
