Shirley Davis says she can sum up her daughter Trudy King in one word.

"She's a fighter.”

Trudy, a 34-year-old mother of five has certainly waged more than her share of battles.

"Our daughter had lung cancer and she beat that, and now she has brain cancer,” says Shirley.

But Shirley says her daughter's not just fighting for her life, she's fighting steep medical bills.

“It costs her $1700 a month for medication,” says Shirley.

The idea for a benefit came about one night right here at the Fox Run Tavern in Seymour. Trudy's cousin was having a drink, and one of the staff overheard him talking about her troubles. They decided to help.

"Just the support of that will give her more hope and that's what I’m hoping for, to raise her spirits up, and with this many people it's definitely going to help her spirits,” says Chuck Davis.

Her cousin Chuck says Trudy’s strength goes beyond her battles with cancer.

"With her husband gone driving truck, she's taking care of all the children. She's a strong woman,” says Chuck.

Shirley and Chuck say they hope Trudy’s experience can help others.

“Please stand behind them,” Shirley begs of anyone who knows someone with cancer. “Be there for them. Just to give them a cup of coffee or to give them a smile or a wink. Just be there for them."

Trudy King says she didn't feel like going on camera with us today. Her family says they're amazed at the turnout and community support.

There's a Trudy King benefit account set up at Bank Mutual in Eau Claire. You can drop by any branch to make a donation.
