Emotions ran high as the sentencing hearing for a man who threw a deadly punch wrapped up in Clark County Monday afternoon. The Judge handed down a 10 year sentence; it includes five years of initial confinement and five years extended supervision.

Tyler Meier pleaded no contest to felony murder after police say he punched Keith Young, 43, in February during a fight at the Brickyard Tavern in Neillsville. The punch knocked Young to the ground. He later died at a hospital.

Amie Young, Keith Young's widow, said speaking in court was the second hardest thing she has ever had to do. She said first was choosing to take husband off life support.

Amie Young told the court, "Tyler had a choice, he could have backed off and walked away but he didn't and now because of that I’m a single mother with a two-year-old child who has to face him every day and explain to him because of someone else's actions he can't see his father anymore."

Daniel Young, Keith's brother also spoke out in the courtroom Monday, "It just seems like this is all taken very lightly and like Amie said we're at a big loss here. Keith is no longer with us and I don’t think it should be taken lightly."

Meier, 37, also broke down in court saying, "I made wrong choices. I can't take back." He said he's an asset to the community not a danger to it.

Tyler Meier's mother also acknowledged her son's wrongdoings, but said she's worried for him, "I believe Amie is 100 percent right--nobody knows the hurt that woman has suffered. Our prayer is for justice for Amie and I'm hoping for some mercy for my son. "

The judge said 75 to 100 people was one of the largest crowds for a Clark County sentencing in recent years. Judge James Mason says Meier's history of violence, alcohol and impulsively is dangerous.

As he was escorted out of court and into police custody, Meier screamed out, "They're going to kill me! They're going to kill me!" His mother says because of his work as a confidential drug informant, Meier will be targeted in prison. She says she's scared for her son's life.

Meier's attorney had asked for eight years of probation, including one year in jail. The judge said probation without prison time was not appropriate.

After court, Clark County District Attorney Darwin Zwieg said he was satisfied with the sentence.

Amie Young left quickly. A victim witness coordinator told WEAU 13 News Young did not wish to comment.
