Altoona Fire Department received notification from lawn care workers around 9:15 a.m. Thursday of flames coming from the back of a home on Edgewood Drive.
The workers and neighbors were spraying the home with garden hoses when fire trucks arrived on the scene.
No one was home at the time of the fire, but one pet was rescued. Officials say although the fire had a head start, crews were able to suppress it fairly rapidly.
"We gained some forced entry and determined that the fire appeared to have started in a bedroom on the backside of the garage," said Altoona Fire Chief Todd Chaney. "The residence has suffered pretty extensive heat and smoke damage."
No one was injured in the fire.
Eau Claire and Township Fire Departments assisted at the scene. The cause is under investigation.
