A new report shows firefighters who witnessed a plane crash that happened last year, killing a pilot with the DNR.
The report from the National Transportation Safety Board shows firefighters who were putting out a grass fire near Pittsville last April noticed the DNR airplane that was observing the fire was flying lower than usual.
One deputy fire chief said the plane made several turns while descending over the fire. He says the last turned seemed low, and when the airplane leveled off, it was only about 35 feet above the ground. That's when he says one of the wings dipped and it suddenly crashed.
36-year-old Heath Van Handel of Appleton was the pilot. A final report on the crash will likely be issued later this year.
