EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Some Eau Claire Middle Schoolers were busy raking and cleaning up around Lake Altoona Friday.

As part of Join Hands Day, the 165 8th graders at North Star Middle School found out what community service is all about and cleaned up Lake Altoona County Park.

"I think to instill in kids early on the value of community service and volunteerism is what makes our community strong and I think they get a good glimpse of that in a one day program like this," said Tim Skutley, the Northstar interim principal.

He said 6th and 7th graders also were busy working on community service projects around the area.
