Poverty Rates Increasing

Wisconsin's poverty rate has hit a ten year high with 9.8 percent of the state's residents living below the poverty line, 60,000 more people than in 2002.

Experts attribute the rise in Wisconsin's poor mostly to the loss of manufacturing jobs in the state and the ongoing recession.

UW Eau Claire political science professor Rodd Freitag says the best way to keep people out of poverty and working is to maintain what he calls Wisconsin's good 'K' through 12 and higher education programs in order to attract new companies to Wisconsin's "productive workers."
