There's a new K-9 helping protect the streets of Altoona.
The Altoona Police Department says it now has a police dog in service. One and a half year old Charlie is a male German Shepherd-Belgian Malinois mix who was imported from Slovakia.
Charlie will help with suspect apprehension and tracking, building searches, evidence recovery and officer protection. Charlie's Officer, Matt McCoy, also plans to use the dog in the schools to show students what the dog can do and how he will serve the community.
The police department says the K-9 unit is funded through donations.
