Dove Hunt

September 1 marked the opening of Wisconsin's second annual mourning dove hunting season.

State wildlife managers say they expect about 24,000 hunters this year, about the same as last year.

In April, the state supreme court upheld the hunt and gave the go-ahead for another season.

Eau Claire is on the northern edge of the bird's range in the state, so it's still possible to hunt the birds here.

Hunters killed around 200,000 of an estimated four million doves in the state last season.

Interested hunters can still get small game permits for this season, which ends October 30.
