The Center for Disease Control estimates more than 300,000 sports-related concussions happen each year in the U.S.

Karen Geissler, a neurology nurse educator at Luther Hospital says serious consequences as a result of sports injuries are relatively uncommon, but shouldn't be taken lightly.

"Once a brain injury has happened," says Geissler, "There's no guarantee that you'll be able to return to the previous level of function you had."

Geissler says two good ways to avoid head injuries are to wear proper equipment, like helmets, and know the proper techniques for the sport you are participating in.
