Seems at Country Jam USA, there’s a bit of a “three day cowboy" phenomenon. Turns out even people who would never wear a cowboy hat or boots the other 362 days of the year can't resist going a little country at Jam.
From the traditional:
"I have my cowboy hat that I bought specifically for Jam in Montana,” says Christine Weigel who also bought boots and a bargain belt buckle for the occasion.
To the more unconventional:
"I’m somewhat shy of (being a cowboy) but a little bit," says Jordan McGinnis who’s decked out in neon socks that don’t match and a neon green cowboy hat with all sorts of weird stuff sticking out of it.
"It’s just the spirit out here," says Heather Wirth of her cowgirl hat which she only pulls out a couple other times a year.
Cowboy hats are a dime a dozen at Jam. Along with the boots, seems everyone wants to get into the country act.
"It is a cowboy thing so everybody wants to give it a try and wants to be a cowboy," says Tim Schmidt as he runs the mechanical bull.
For some people looking the part isn't enough, but they often find out when they try to act the cowboy on the bucking bull, it's a lot harder than it looks.
"It hurts. It's fun. It goes really fast though," says Nathan Pientok. "It’s lot harder than I thought. I listened to my friends. Not smart."
Now, this story is not to say there aren't some real cowboys in the crowd Jim Styczinski from Conrath certainly qualifies—he's Friday's farmer's tan champion.
The daily contest pulls in quite the crowd of revelers between the acts thousands of would-be cowboys pay to see.
"Why try to be somebody you're not? If you've got the farmers tan, wear what you've got," says Jason, a finalist who only wanted to give us his first name.
Guess, at Country Jam USA, even a big 'ol farmer's tan can be pretty chic.
If you don't have a cowboy hat or belt buckle or bandanna, don’t panic, you can certainly find one at Jam.
