Rock Falls Family's Barn Destroyed But House Spared
Thursday night strong storms and winds ripped through Rock Falls. Most were spared from damage, but one family is picking up the pieces those winds left behind. Posted: 4:09 PM Sep 21, 2007Reporter: Lindsay Veremis Email Address: lindsay.veremis@weau.com |

On Thursday night Ron Bauer and his family say they were watching TV when the storm outside grew louder. Bauer says immediately his house started to shake, panels of Styrofoam from the homes addition were flying through the air and the trees were nearly touching the ground. Then, minutes later... it was over.
>
"We looked around and saw that our tree was gone and after looking around again, all of a sudden glanced over by the barn and where is it? Bauer said. "And then you start getting that sick feeling wondering about everything underneath it."
>
A pile of wreckage is all that remains of Bauer's once sturdy barn. He says the initial shock has passed and says now his family is trying to figure out what's salvageable, what's lost and how much it will cost to clean up the mess.
>
Bauer's son Curtis says what hurts the most wasn't the loss of the barn, but what's inside. He says his prized 67' Chevy Impala is totaled.
>
"A 71' Bradley GT was sitting outside the barn and the Impala sits right next to it where you can see there's hardly any wall left," Curtis said.
>
The Bauer family also lost four tractors, one newly painted and repaired, a number of spare mechanical parts they store in the barn and many of the trees in their yard.
>
Ron says they don't have insurance on the barn and expect the clean-up to be lengthy. But, he says they feel blessed because their home was spared and no one was hurt.
