Charges have been dropped against three UW-Stout students who turned themselves in for starting a grass fire last year.

Dunn County District Attorney, Jim Peterson, says Taylor Byron, Russ Droessler and Joseph Hein will split paying $10,000 to the departments who fought the fire. It happened in April of 2009 near Elk Mound.

The fire forced some people out of their homes and consumed more than 600 acres of land. Deputies say the three men told investigators they were setting off fireworks in the area and later saw the fire on TV.

Peterson says he doesn't think they intentionally set the fires.
