THORP, Wis. (WEAU) -- Some people decorate their homes this time of year to make them look and feel spooky for Halloween.
But a local family says they get the chills all year long, living alongside ghosts in a haunted house.
Dorthy Kingery said it was the number of bedrooms and the large backyard that brought them to their house in Thorp two years ago.
But the local mom said it wasn't long before strange things started happening.
They called local paranormal investigators to take a look at the haunt.
And the Assignment 13 Team went along for a closer look.
“The TV would turn up on its own. Lights would just flip on and off and we'd hear doors opening and closing and footsteps on the stairways here and nobody around,” Kingery said.
Kingery said her family figured it was something electrical or echoes.
That is until they would wake up with mysterious scratches and bruises.
“After so many things that have happened, we really couldn't be skeptical anymore,” Kingery said.
The mother of four said they started to believe they were living in a real haunted house.
She told WEAU that her family has recorded voices of possible spirits and have caught some on camera.
When the family moved in they remodeled the house, including putting in a pool.
They say previous dwellers, now possible spirits, could be upset with the changes.
Wanting to find out more, they contacted S.I.T.E. to come and look at the house.
“S.I.T.E stands for Sprit Investigations, Tracking and Encounters. We are paranormal investigators that go through out the Chippewa Valley and beyond to help people with issues that they have in their homes,” said Audrey Van Wey of S.I.T.E.
Kingery said this is the second time a paranormal group has come to investigate her house and said they've even gone as far as getting it blessed.
The ghost hunters start by going through out the property and house with their investigative tools.
Then it's lights out and the search for paranormal life intensifies.
The team takes pictures, records audio and video, and tries to communicate with spirits using a K2 meter.
Van Wey said when a ghost gets close to it, electricity in the air will change and the meter's dial will light up.
And light up it did.
While asking questions, investigators saw the K2 meter change colors on several occasions.
Snapping photos in one of the kids' bedrooms, investigators captured pictures of several orbs.
While they could be bugs or dust, the paranormal group said an orb could be a spirit caught on camera.
A WEAU camera that was rolling during the investigation shows a possible orb moving across the screen and disappearing.
In a different bedroom on the second floor, investigators caught a strange noise that sounds like a child’s laughter.
Then there were personal experiences.
An investigator got a strange itch while questioning a spirit and psychics on the team said they felt a male presence in the basement that seemed angry.
After looking at the evidence, the paranormal group said there's definitely something happening at the house.
“We've had enough personal experiences and some things with the equipment that would indicate there's an intelligent haunt here,” Van Wey said.
Van Wey to make it stop, the family may have to reclaim their home by asking ghosts to leave or having it blessed again. While she doesn't like that her kids don't feel comfortable in the house, Kingery said it would take a lot more to make them move.
“Maybe if we could get a definite answer who's here. For me it's kind of nice to know because now I know that something can go on after you die,” Kingery said.
