NEILLSVILLE, Wis. (CLARK COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT NEWS RELEASE) - On Saturday March 16, 2013 shortly before 6:00PM the Clark County Communications Center received a report of a train derailment on County Road K between Hatfield and Merrillan in Clark County. Information received was that 19 cars had derailed. There were no injuries reported. County Rd K was blocked by the derailment and the roadway was closed as a result of the incident. The railroad cars were transporting sand and no hazardous materials were involved.

The Canadian National Railroad brought in heavy equipment to clean up the scene, including re-railing of some of the cars and movement of others clear of the tracks to allow for repairs and clean up. The cars which could not be placed back onto the rails will be unloaded and removed once completed. This continued clean up is expected to keep the roadway closed for a couple more days. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes until the cleanup is completed and the roadway can be re-opened to regular traffic.

Agencies involved in the response to this accident included Hatfield Fire Department, Jackson and Clark County Sheriff’s Departments, Jackson and Clark County Highway Departments, Clark County Emergency Management, as well as Canadian National Railroad.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

CLARK COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Clark County Sheriff's Department says 19 cars derailed off of tracks between Merillan and Hatfield around six o’clock tonight.

The train was carrying sand - and we know at least one car spilled tons of sand.

Deputies say there was one operator on the train, who was not injured in the accident.

A cause has not yet been determined.

Clark County Emergency Management says it’s working with Canadian National Railways, the owner of the train, on the investigation.

The Emergency Management Director, John Ross says the clean-up will continue well into tomorrow.

"The big challenge will be, you’ll have a lot of heavy equipment involved, you’ll have cleanup of the cars, you may have to empty some of the cars, to move them upright. It’s definitely not a typical accident scene,” said Ross.

County road ‘K’ in Clark County is now closed in that area. Drivers are asked to take alternate routes.
