ATV trails, routes in Eau Claire County to close March 15

ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- Eau Claire County is about to close its all-terrain vehicle trails and routes for more than a month.

On Thursday, the Parks & Forest Department announced that the ATV trails and routes would be closed starting March 15. The department is shooting for a tentative date of May 1 to re-open the trails. The closure coincides with the closing of the adjacent ATV trails and routes in Clark County. The closure happens annually. Parks & Forest Director Josh Pedersen says melting snow in the spring softens the trails, and closing them prevents rutting and tearing along the trails.

Pedersen says the trail system in Eau Claire County encompasses more than 20 miles. There are another 20 miles considered routes that connect cities in the county to the trails.
