Amish boy drowns while cutting ice

TOWN OF CLINTON, Wis. (AP) -- A 17-year-old Amish youth drowned while cutting ice on a spring-fed pond in the Town of Clinton in Vernon County of western Wisconsin.

Sheriff John Spears says the youth and other boys were cutting ice Saturday. The others delivered a load of blocks to the family's farm, and upon returning to the pond noticed the boy was missing. A 911 call was placed from a neighbor's phone around noon.

Emergency crews were dispatched along with two dive teams. They used ATVs and Amish sleds to reach the pond. They found his hat near a break in the ice.

Divers recovered his body after he'd been in the water more than two hours. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not been released.
