Ammo starts going off as crews fight fire

TOWN OF CLEVELAND, Wis. (WEAU) – Ammunition that was kept in a Chippewa County home started going off as crews fought a fire there Thursday.

The Cornell Fire Department responded to the fire on County Road Z, west of Cornell, early Thursday afternoon. Crews had to back off when the rounds went off, but eventually put out the flames. The fire destroyed the home.

Firefighters say nearly 2,500 rounds were kept in the home.

Nobody was hurt. There’s no word on what caused the fire.
