WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (AP) -- Sheriff's authorities in central Wisconsin credit some passers-by with saving the life of a man knocked unconscious in a fiery car crash.
Officials say a car driven by a Wisconsin Rapids man drifted off Highway 73 in Wood County Sunday afternoon, hit some hay bales, flipped over and ignited the vehicle and the hay.
Wood County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Lee Garrels says people passing by pulled the man from the vehicle and saved his life. Garrels says by the time first responders arrived, the vehicle was destroyed by fire.
Daily Tribune Media says that in addition to the driver's injuries, a rescuer was taken to a Wisconsin Rapids hospital for smoke inhalation.
