STORY FROM 10/15
ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) – On Tuesday, things will return to normal at Altoona School District following a lockdown. But the search continues for 32-year-old Shane Gregory who deputies say is possibly armed and led officers on a chase through two counties.
A lockdown happened around 11:40 a.m. Monday in the Altoona School District after police notified the district Gregory was heading in the direction of the schools.
Superintendent Dr. Connie Biedron says there were children just over the hills, many who were playing outside for recess or eating lunch in the cafeteria.
“We wanted to make sure we got everybody inside to a place that was safe. We didn’t know how long it was going to be and it ended up being the rest of the day,” says Biedron.
She says things will return to normal at Altoona School District Tuesday.
“It’s right back to business as usually. Everyone was dismissed today at the end for the day. We cancelled events after school, which we didn’t have a lot to cancel, but just to make sure everybody got home safe and sound, because I know parents wanted them there,” says Biedron.
Biedron says there was already a pre-planned crisis plan meeting next week where the administrative council and chief of police would meet and discuss what to do if there was a lockdown type of situation.
“We had our emergency today and so we have a lot of good input back from the staff to look at for updating our policy for the future,” says Biedron.
But now, the search continues for the possibly armed man who led officers on chase through two counties and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says it’s also looking for him.
Gregory was last seen in Altoona but officers have not been able to locate him yet. Sheriff Ron Cramer with Eau Claire County says plenty of tip calls have been coming in with possible sitings of the suspect, but no solid lead yet.
DNR spokesperson Ed Culhane says Chippewa County Warden Shawn Deeley was on the lookout for Gregory as a person of interest in a wildfire in Eau Claire. No other details on the fire have been released.
The DNR along with Chippewa and Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Department have been working together on the case.
Monday’s pursuit just so happened to involve the man the DNR was looking for.
Around 8 a.m., Chippewa County deputies were called to the town of Sigel because of a suspicious vehicle.
Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk says a deputy found Shane Gregory sleeping inside the vehicle. When the deputy tried to wake him, Gregory became resistive, even trying to run over the officer.
That's when the deputy fired three shots at the vehicle and the high speed chase began, heading south on 240th street.
Gregory eventually crashed on 12th Avenue and 240th Street near the Eau Claire County line.
The sheriff says the suspect ran on foot, broke into a home in rural Fall Creek, confronted a person to hand over keys to an SUV and took off.
That's where Chippewa County DNR Warden Deeney comes in.
Deeney saw the stolen SUV along with his person of interest, Gregory.
Culhane says Deeney followed Gregory into Altoona, where police also stepped into the picture.
“After stopping at the parking lot of Karate American, he fled on foot. Which led Altoona police to put Altoona schools and nearby daycares on lockdown,” says Chief James Small with Altoona Police. “He may be armed with a handgun. He has numerous warrants out of Clark County.”
Sheriff Ron Cramer with Eau Claire County says he received information that Gregory was armed with a small caliber handgun.
Cramer says tips have been coming in from concerned community members, but no solid leads yet in the search.
ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- The search continues for a possibly armed man who led officers on a chase through two counties.
Police say the suspect is Shane Gregory.
The Altoona Police Department said he’s 32 years old, has a goatee and was last seen wearing a leather jacket and blue jeans.
Officers said he's possibly armed with a handgun and was last seen in Altoona.
But before the manhunt started for him in Altoona, officers said he got in trouble with the law in Chippewa County.
The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department said before 8 a.m.
Monday, deputies responded to a vacant house at 240th street near County Highway X in the Town of Sigel on a report of a suspicious vehicle and possible burglary.
When deputies arrived they said Shane Gregory drove off and a deputy fired three shots.
A chase then started but deputies said the suspect ditched his vehicle near the Eau Claire County border.
It's believed Gregory stole a Chevy SUV and drove it into Altoona.
Police Chief James Small said Altoona officers were involved in a pursuit which started on Briar Lane and ended at Karate American on Hillcrest.
It's not yet known what the suspect was doing in Altoona or how police tracked him down.
Small said Gregory abandoned the stolen vehicle behind Karate American and fled into the woods.
With weapons drawn, officers established a perimeter around the woods.
Nearby Altoona schools and daycares were put on lockdown.
Small said the suspect has numerous warrants out of Clark County.
After an extensive search of the woods didn't find Gregory, the lockdown was lifted and students left at their normal times.
The school district has canceled all practices and events for Monday night but a School Board meeting was still held.
Officers believe Gregory could have made his way out of the area sometime Monday afternoon.
He is still on the loose.

Eau Claire County Sheriff Ron Cramer says investigators are looking for Shane Gregory, 32. The sheriff describes him as wearing a black leather jacket and jeans, and having a goatee. At this point, the sheriff says he’s not sure if Gregory has a gun, but that he should be alone at this point.
Sheriff Cramer says Gregory has stolen a couple of vehicles and that he’s talked about leaving the area. Officers have concentrated their search in the area between 10th Street and 3rd Street and in the Knollwood Village area, but he could be in either Eau Claire County or Chippewa County.
