Big Falls County Park reopened after report of a man with a gun

EAU CLAIRE COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) - "We cleared the entire area, went across the water, cleared the islands just to make sure its safe," said Lt. Rod Stearns with the Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department.

Big Falls County Park closed just after the noon hour Friday, after the Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department got a call about a man acting suspicious.

Stearns says the caller reported the man injecting himself with a drug, stripping naked, and then pulling out a gun. That is when the caller, called police.

"Anytime that involves a weapon, that obviously heightens the danger," Stearns added.

The S.W.A.T. team was called in to help clear the park to comb what Stearns says was about one to two square miles of land.

"Our whole idea here was due dilligence, just to make sure everyone was safe," Stearns said.

Police went through the woods and drove the roads. But Stearns says they were not able to find the man or the weapon. They just gave a vague description: a man with brown hair standing about 5 feet 8 inches.

Stearns says they also have some plates they will run.

"We suspect that he had a vehicle up here and by the time we got the call and got out, he departed before we actually arrived," Stearns said.

But despite everything that happened, Stearns said no one was in danger.

"The way he was acting it was more of a deranged type person," he said. "What he was doing running around in the sand, there was no threat to the person that was there, he took off right away but nothing showed the guy had signs of threatnining anyone. It was just different," he said.
