NEW INFORMATION: Wis. bishop charged in crash that killed runner

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Lutheran bishop is charged with striking and killing a runner in Sun Prairie last weekend.

Bishop Bruce Burnside was charged Wednesday with three felonies and one misdemeanor. The Wisconsin State Journal (http://bit.ly/10LMZKt ) reports charges include homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. Other charges include hit-and-run and homicide by negligent use of a vehicle.

Burnside is bishop of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The 59-year-old oversees 145 congregations in a 13-county area.

Burnside is accused of striking and killing 52-year-old Maureen Mengelt, a married mother of three and an avid runner. Mengelt was a former City of Madison police officer.

Church officials have said Burnside as on his way to a Sunday ceremony at a Sun Prairie church when the crash happened.

The 59-year-old bishop was in custody Tuesday. He is accused of striking and killing 52-year-old Maureen Mengelt as she was out for a run Sunday.

The suspect is a bishop in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. An official at the suspect's synod asks that the current focus be on the victim, not the bishop.

Mengelt was a former City of Madison police officer. She had two daughters and a son.

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (AP) -- Friends and family say a former Madison police officer was running near her home in Sun Prairie when she was struck and killed by a Lutheran bishop who police say was driving drunk.

The Dane County medical examiner's office on Monday identified the victim as 52-year-old Maureen Mengelt.

The State Journal reports Mengelt was training alone for an upcoming race when she was struck at the bottom of an off-ramp of Highway 151. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Friends say Mengelt was an officer with the Madison Police Department in the late 1980s.

The suspect was arrested and taken to jail. Church officials say the man is a bishop in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

No formal charges had been filed Monday.

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (AP) -- A Lutheran Bishop has been arrested after hitting and killing a pedestrian in Sun Prairie Sunday afternoon.

Officers say 59-year-old Bruce Burnside was arrested near the scene of the crash.

Burnside is a former pastor at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Monona who was elected as a Bishop in 2007.

Police have not yet identified the woman who was killed in the crash.

Officers say Burnside had been drinking and was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
