NEW INFORMATION: Man found dead in river drowned accidentally

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) – A medical examiner says the man found dead in the Mississippi River Saturday drowned accidentally.

The Office of LaCrosse County Medical Examiners announced the ruling on Wednesday morning. Police found the body of Lynn Frank Johannes, 61, of La Crescent, MN in the Bluff Slough area, which is a backwater area off the river.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- We now know the name of the man who’s body found was found in the Mississippi River on Saturday.

The La Crosse Police Department said the victim is 61-year-old Lynn Frank Johannes of La Crescent, Minnesota.

Lieutenant Patrick Hogan said the victim, 61-year-old Lynn Frank Johannes was fishing in the Bluff Slough area, a back water area off the Mississippi River.

“There was a single boat that was anchored out in the Bluff Slough area that was anchored approximately 20-30 feet off the shore with no one in it,” said Hogan.

Police said they were called around 1 p.m. Saturday to assist the fire department and the dive rescue team in the Bluff Slough area.

“After rescue attempts in the Slough area, dive rescue and the fire department did locate that person in the water,” said Hogan.

Police said Johannes wasn’t wearing a life vest.

Melody Arquillo said her husband was on the water during the search, and said it’s sad to see someone lose their life in the river.

“I know bodies are found in rivers and stuff like that, but it’s usually more main channel, so when it actually happened right behind our house in our slough, it was kind of frightening to find out,” said Arquillo.

Police said no foul play is suspected and an autopsy is set to be done on Tuesday.

Police said it’s important to wear a life vest, especially if you’re boating alone.

On Monday, La Crosse police confirmed that he is Lynn Frank Johannes, 61, of La Crescent Minnesota. Police say he was fishing at the time.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
LA CROSSE, Wis (WEAU)—The body of a 61 year old man was pulled from Bluff Slough in La Crosse Saturday (6/8) afternoon.

Bluff Slough is the area of the back waters of the Mississippi near Green Island Park. The call came in around on of an unattended fishing boat. La Crosse fire crews along with the La Crosse County dive team searched the water and discovered the body around 3:00pm. The man’s name has not been released. La Crosse Police are investigating
