NEW INFORMATION: Investigators looking for witnesses to semi crash; boy seriously hurt

ALMA, Wis. (BUFFALO COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE) -- On Tuesday, April 1st, 2014 at approximately 4:10pm, the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department received a report of a child that had been struck by a semi on STH 25/35 at the intersection of Jefferson St in the Village of Nelson. On arrival, deputies found that the striking vehicle had continued southbound through Nelson after the accident, according to a witness. The victim was a nine year male, who sustained life threatening injuries. The child was transported by Alma Ambulance to Wabasha Hospital in Wabasha, MN, then transported by air ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN.

The limited description of the striking vehicle was described as having a white semi trailer with pictures on the side. The young witness was not able to tell deputies what the "pictures" were. There was no other description that could be provided by the witness. It's unknown if the semi continued in the direction of Wabasha or if turned to go southbound on STH 35 in the direction of Alma.

The child was crossing the highway with one other child when the accident occurred. The children had stopped to yield for traffic, but victim ran out on to the highway and was struck by the rear portion of the semi trailer. The identity of the child is not being released at this time.

The Buffalo County Sheriff's Department is asking for assistance from anyone who may have witnessed the accident or could provide information regarding the accident. They are asked to call the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department at 608-685-4433.

The accident is being investigated by the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol. Also assisting a the scene was the Alma Ambulance and Nelson Fire Department.

NELSON, Wis. (WEAU) -- A sheriff's department is investigating a collision between a vehicle and a child as a hit-and-run.

The Buffalo County Sheriff's Office responded to the intersection of State Highway 25/35 and Jefferson Street after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Chief Deputy Colin Severson says the vehicle hit a nine-year-old boy. He did not know the extent of the boy's injuries. Severson did not identify the driver of the vehicle. He says the circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation, and that more information could be released later Thursday evening.

Crews had a stretch of highway 25/35 blocked off at Cleveland Street. The road was re-opened after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
